A friend asked me to build a reading lamp for her father, a retired nuclear physics professor. After I had sketched out the design, I used natural growth and decay equations to smooth the curves. Natural growth and decay curves tell us the progress of nuclear decay, among other things that change over time. The middle cutout is parabolic, and the curves on the base are cylindrical.
